On January 25-27, 2022, NCER and NCSER hosted our first Principal Investigators (PI) Meeting since the COVID-19 pandemic changed the world as we know it. Even though we were hopeful and eager to connect with our grantees in person, given the continuing uncertainties due to COVID-19, we opted for our very first fully virtual PI meeting, and we are pleased to say it was a success on many fronts!

As the number of multilingual learners in educational contexts in both the US and abroad increases, a key question for educational stakeholders is how best to assess these learners who bring multiple linguistic repertoires to the classroom in ways that contribute to their academic success.
In this symposium hosted by the Center for Applied Linguistics, panelists will explore what a multilingual orientation to language assessment might look like. Speakers explore what multilingualism is and how it impacts on assessment—including approaches to large scale assessment in both the United States and overseas, how educators and teachers support their multilingual learners using assessment, and which contexts are well-suited for the introduction of multilingual approaches to assessment.

Hispanic Heritage Month was celebrated from September 15 to October 15 this year. There was much to be thankful for, but also much work still to do.
In our work at the Center for the Success of ELs (CSEL), an IES funded National Research and Development Center, our team is diligently working to clarify issues related to English learner (EL) classification and achievement, as well as the special challenges brought on by the pandemic, and to identify future challenges to which we must turn our attention.
