Co-Investigator

Philip Capin is a research assistant professor for the Department of Special Education and a researcher for the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Capin's research focuses on improving reading instruction and assessment for children, including those with or at risk for reading disabilities.

Dr. Capin has extensive experience developing and testing reading interventions through randomized control trials. In recent years, he has played a primary role in Institutes for Education Sciences (IES) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) studies examining the efficacy of interventions for student with or at risk for reading reading disabilities. These projects have investigated innovative approaches to reading instruction that integrate instruction focused on factors related to reading, such as reading motivation, self-regulation, and anxiety management.

Dr. Capin is currently involved in four funded projects, including serving as Co-PI for two grants focused on English learners. Before receiving his Ph.D. in special education from the University of Texas at Austin, he was a special education teacher and a credentialed school administrator.
